The Unhealthiest Foods in the World

You may know that there are certain foods that are better for you than others, but do you know why? Beyond the amount of calories and other nutrients involved, you have to think of the chemicals and additives in these foods and how they can impact your body. These additions to food can hurt your health and make it more difficult to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Here are some of the unhealthiest foods out there – foods you should avoid!

Microwave Popcorn

Microwave popcorn is convenient and relatively low in calories, but you’re getting a lot more than you bargained for when you zap a bag. Microwave popcorn almost always contains trans fat, diacetyl, and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

You know trans fats are bad for you, but what about the other stuff? The bags containing the microwave popcorn often contains PFOA, which is the toxic stuff that makes Teflon pots and pans so dangerous to your health. The butter flavored popcorn also has diacetyl in it, a chemical that breaks down the protective layer of cells in your brain.

If you’re really craving popcorn, pop your own! Heat up some coconut oil in a pan, throw in some kernels and a lid and you’ve got yourself a whole grain treat! You can also put popcorn kernels in a brown paper bag in the microwave and make your own microwave popcorn.

Fruit Juice

Fruit juice may look tempting because it has all the Vitamin C you need, but it also contains fructose. What’s so bad about fructose? Well, nothing when you eat it in a piece of fruit along with fiber, but when you drink it you may as well be eating straight sugar. A glass of 100 percent fruit juice has about as much sugar per cup as 4 donuts.

If you drink juice because you don’t like plain water, add some fresh fruit or herbs to your water to kick it up a notch. You will cut out all that sugar and stay hydrated. If you’re craving fruit, eat a piece instead of drinking it.

Processed Meats

Sausage and bacon may be delicious, but they’re full of things that are bad for you. Aside from all the unhealthy fat and salt, they also have something in them called nitrates. Nitrates are a preservative added to them and it interrupts your body’s natural ability to process sugar. That increases your risk for diabetes. Nitrates have also been linked to colon and thyroid cancers, so it’s probably best to avoid them.
