Make Exercise as Safe as Possible
By Tom Herrin
Deciding to start an exercise program is a major first step for many people who are beginning to get serious about improving themselves. While it may be the thought that counts, a good plan may be what is really important. Those who get excited about it often let that enthusiasm get in the way of their thinking. In order to have the most successful program, it is critical to practice the very best of safety procedures. Even with the most moderate of exercise routines, people must plan ahead and follow through with their plans.
Cool It
Even though many people claim to know its importance, a proper warm-up at the beginning of exercise is every bit as much a part of a good program as the exercise itself. This allows blood to begin to flow to the extremities and lessen the chance of tissue damage. At the other end of what workout, it is just as important to cool down properly to allow the heart an opportunity to slow down at the right pace.
Drink Lots of Water
It is easy to overlook the role of water in exercise. Too many times, people wait until they are thirsty and then try to load up on it. This can be too little, too late. It is much better to drink water throughout the day prior to the workout. Drinking at regular intervals during the workout can help to keep the water replenished. The finish to this is to drink water following the activity. This can help keep replacement at the correct level. When they are involved in heavier or more demanding activities, they may want to drink something with electrolytes so they can keep up with demands for replacement.
Learn as Much as Possible
One of my problems is that, too many times, I have had to learn by my own mistakes. I have had a bad habit of putting off drinking an adequate amount of water while exercising. The end result of that has sometimes been cramps. I have learned better. I also have been bad about failing to warm up properly. This is asking for trouble. Being short on time is not a good excuse for cutting down on warming up or cooling down either. A good exercise program should include whatever it takes to make it one that supports good health.
