Technology and the Effects on Your Health

By Rachel Shouse

Although social media and the internet in general were created to be helpful, overuse of these technologies have proven to cause some negative effects as well. Overuse of technology can have a negative impact on not only your mental health, but your physical health as well. Abusing technology time can worsen depression symptoms, cause neck and posture problems, and reduce physical activity.

Technology and Your Mental Health

It's kind of hard to pinpoint what could be causing mental health problems as an individual. Although trauma and abuse can surely cause these problems, chemical imbalances, or your genetics could cause it as well. If you suffer from depression, it would be wise for you to monitor your own screen time. Most phones these days have options in your settings that you can activate in order to monitor your screen time. Some phones even break down the amount of time spent between different categories.

Social media can be a great tool that keeps families and friends in regular contact. It shouldn't be the only form of contact you have though. Getting out and spending time with people, in person, is very important.

Your Phone Could Be Hurting Your Neck and Posture

You have probably felt a neck strain or two when you've spent a large chunk of time staring at your phone or computer. Sometimes these problems can be fixed by changing positions. Beyond that though, it's also important to make sure it's not an abuse of screen time. No amount of posture changes will save your body from strains caused by too much technology time. Just remain mindful.

Too Much Technology Reduces Physical Activity

Some people use their phones for music, some use it for games, and others may use it for social media. Regardless of what you're using it for, it could very well be pushing you towards a more sedentary lifestyle. A lack of exercise causes problems you've heard of more than you'd probably like to reflect on.

Lack of physical activity not only affects your physical health, but your mental health as well. Getting up and moving has proven to help reduce many mental illness symptoms. Thinking about all of the benefits of exercise can help motivate you toward a healthy routine.

Technology can be fun and can be used in a healthy manner. However, the only way to know if there's a problem is to self-evaluate. There's no need to feel bad if you find a problem. It just means that you have something new to work on. No shame in that.
