Chiropractic Tips to Put the Family First
By Sandy Schroeder
It’s natural to focus on the family right now. After a long winter, you may be ready to be outdoors with your kids. Biking or walking with kids creates special times. Kids’ sports may need help. Moms may be cleaning up the patio. Dads may be firing up the barbecue or trimming bushes.
Whatever is happening, your local chiropractor may make it safer and healthier.
How Your Chiropractor Helps
Stop by The Joint Chiropractic clinic to see how the staff of licensed chiropractors work. You might bring the whole family in to set up health profiles. Then your chiropractor will be ready to help if an injury occurs.
Spinal adjustments are used to seek pain relief and wellness. After spinal adjustments, you may all feel better. This could mean better sleep, improved digestion, more energy, or fresh alertness.
Your chiropractor can also suggest ways to protect the spine as your pursue summer activities.
Lifting and Carrying
- Never bend from the waist.
- Lead with hips, not shoulders. If hips lag behind, they can trigger a twist causing back injury.
- Hold objects, and children, near the body. The farther away objects are the more power is needed. Providing that power can injure the lower back.
- Kneel to pick up large items from the floor. Kneel behind the item. Use leg strength to power the lift.
- Arrange for movers to handle heavy objects and furniture.
Lawn and Garden Moves
- To avoid pain, injury or stiffness, walk around before you start. Then do a few stretches such as these from The American Chiropractic Association.
- Stand up. Link your fingers over your head. Lean to one side for 10 seconds, then to the other. Repeat twice.
- Sit down. Prop your heel up on a step. Keep knees straight. Lean forward until there is a stretch in the back of the thigh. Hold for 15 seconds. Alternate legs.
- Never bend from the waist. Kneel and change your positions frequently. Don’t overdo it in your first session.
As always, check with your physician before starting new exercises.
