Why Attitude Makes All of the Difference
By Sandy Schroeder
Today, as I waited in the ATM line, I watched a lady make her way out of the bank. She was bent forward clutching her walker, but moving right along. When she got to me, she paused and asked, “Have you heard about the restaurant on the moon?” I shook my head. She replied, "Yes, the food’s good, but it has no atmosphere!” I chuckled and thanked her for the joke, and she went on to her car. That lady had an amazing attitude!
In spite of her age, and her limitations with the walker, she was enjoying the day, and reaching out to share it with others. Meanwhile, everybody else in the ATM line looked bored, exhausted, frustrated or impatient. If you looked closely, you could almost see little signs over their heads calling out their attitudes. Each one was much more mobile than the lady with the walker, but none of them could top her attitude.
How many times do we slip into a negative attitude when we might lighten up? What would happen if we did? We might be sharing jokes and having a good day, too.
People with good attitudes really have it all figured.
They start the day on a happy note - Most of us know someone like this. They can always find a reason to smile and usually they manage to make us laugh, too.
They reach out to help others - They are never too tired or too busy to help local animal shelters, senior care facilities, and the local library. They discovered long ago that giving feels much better than getting.
They are always receptive - They have their own groove, but their door is always open for new ideas.
They don’t give up easily - When projects become overloaded or issues come up, they help calm everyone down and keep looking for the best answers.
They are dependable - When projects stumble or deadlines loom, they just keep going and always show up.
Attitude really does make the difference in big and small ways. When it’s good, all sorts of things are possible. When it’s bad, even little issues cause problems. I think we can all take a cue from the lady at the bank. Good attitudes are always worth having. Who knows what will happen next.
