How to Safely Run in the Summer Heat

By Genevieve Cunningham

Running really is a great workout. It's a serious calorie burner, a muscle builder, and a fat minimizer. And many people really enjoy it! Unfortunately, running is harder to enjoy when it's burning hot outside. It’s harder to get motivated, harder to finish the run, and harder to stay safe and healthy during the run. So do you have to hang up your running shoes for the summer? Luckily, the answer is no. To maintain a healthy running routine this summer, take a look at these tips.

Adjust Your Wardrobe

This may seem like the obvious option, but you'd be surprised at how many people are hesitant to change their clothing. If you run year-round, it's absolutely imperative that your clothes changed with the season. In the winter, you may need a jacket and a hat. In the summer, you're going to need a lot less clothing. Make sure that you're wearing clothes that are light and that breathe. This enables the body to cool down appropriately, which then helps you stay cool enough to finish your run.

Take Plenty of Water

You get dehydrated much faster than you realize. If you plan on running in the heat, you must take plenty of water. By the time that you feel sick from the heat, It's too late. Your body is already suffering. And though you can take a rest, cool down, and sip some water after the fact, it's best to protect your body in a preventative manner. Carry a water bottle or two with you. Leave them in the car or at rest stops along your trail. Sip throughout your run, and you'll better be able to protect your body from the scorching heat of the summer.

Choose Wisely

Running in the summer might mean choosing a different location. If you usually jog on a trail without shade, you may want to find a shaded area for the remainder of the summer months. Shade can provide a significant drop in temperature, and this makes a huge difference to the wellness of your body. If shade isn't available and it's a particularly hot day, you may want to take your jog indoors. Choose your location and your time of day wisely in order to protect your body and keep it as healthy as possible without sacrificing your run.

You don't have to give up your run just because it's summer. But you don't have to let your body suffer from the heat either. Use these tips to maintain your safety throughout the hotter months of the year. With a little planning and some changes to the minor details of your exercise routine, you can get the best of both worlds while still pushing your body toward better health.
