Daily Habits for a Better Back

If you experience back pain, you might look no further than your daily habits. Bad habits like poor posture or improper lifting can contribute to major back pain and soreness. Luckily, since little habits can cause such pain, a few changes in habit can eliminate or stave off back pain in the first place. Here are some simple habits to add to your routine to keep back pain away:

Sleep with a pillow- You probably already sleep with a pillow, but repurpose the pillow to ease back pain. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow below your knees to take some of the pressure off of your back resulting in less tension. If you sleep on your side, place the pillow between your knees. This helps to keep the spine aligned properly so that you are unlikely to experience pain from misalignment.

Strengthen your core- A lot of people think that eliminating back pain is all about better back muscles, but the truth is that a lot of back pain can be cured by strengthening the stomach muscles. When the stomach muscles are strong, it helps to take some of the work from the back muscles. This means that they are not overworked leading to less chances of being injured. To strengthen the core muscles try some sit-ups, crunches, or leg lifts.

Check your shoes- Bad shoes are not only bad for your feet, they’re also bad for your back! Eliminating back pain can be done by choosing the right pair of shoes. Wear comfortable shoes with a lot of support to help get rid of back pain. Those heels might be really cute, but for the back, a supportive tennis shoe is the go-to shoe.

Stop slouching- This is one of the hardest things to do. Our bad habit of slouching, however, has contributed to a large amount of back pain. Try to pay attention to your posture everyday. Keep the spine erect, stop slumping the shoulders, and try not to keep the neck bent over a device. Even though this might make you sore in the beginning, it’ll quickly strengthen the back and reduce pain.
