Meditation Basics: How to Get the Practice Started
When you hear the word meditation, you might picture a few different images. Some picture a young, fit person in their bedroom with a candle. Others might see a Buddhist monk or similar religious figure. The truth is, however, that meditation can be extremely beneficial to the most average of persons.
It has been proven that meditation can calm the nerves, reduce stress, induce more quality sleep, and improve overall health. The hardest part about meditation is getting started. If you are a newbie, but would like to give the practice a try, check out these tips for getting into the meditation habit.
Start Slow
The number 1 mistake that most people make is jumping in for way too long way too soon. The first time, you are not going to be able to meditate for 20 minutes. Instead, shoot for 1 minute of complete silence. Then, slowly increase your length over time. Doing too much too soon will leave you frustrated and wanting to quit.
Find or Make a Space
Another mistake that many people make is trying to meditate in a space that isn’t helpful. Too much noise or distraction can really take away from the meditation experience. Try and find a quiet spot in the house, one in which you are unlikely to be interrupted, and make that your spot. A closet, the corner of a room, or an outside space are all great options for meditating. Too much distraction will keep you from relaxing and clearing your mind, which are 2 of the main goals in meditation.
Ask for Help
Believe it or not, there are meditation coaches. If you can’t seem to make it work, find someone that can help you out. A quick internet search will bring up meditation coaches near you, so give one a call and ask for help. If you are not interested or don’t want to pay the price of a coach, check out the cds or dvds that are made for beginning meditation. You might find one that suits your style and gets you in the habit.
If you can ever get started meditating, it can bring about a host of healthy benefits. Use these tips to get started with meditation, and to stick with it when the going gets tough. Always remember to cut yourself a little slack. Meditating is hard work! So, be easy with yourself, patient, and stick with it for the best and most lasting results.
