Is Keeping Up with Fashion Killing Your Back?

By Virginia Laird

Can it be possible that keeping up with fashion trends can also give you back problems. As silly as it may sound, this can be the case. I am talking about the actual style that may be on your body at this very moment. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is my purse (or bag) a bit on the heavy side? By heavy, I mean 10 pounds or more.
  • Have I worn heels most of the week?
  • Are my feet aching just thinking of the word heels?
  • Have I experienced any back or neck pain after a long day at work?

If you can answer yes to any of the above questions, most likely, your fashion sense is killing your back and you're due at the chiropractor's office any day now.

The Purse (or Bag)

Those of us who love and live for style have serious issues when it comes to putting down the large tote. They are in style. And we all know that the larger the bag, the more junk we can stuff into it. As a mother of a toddler, I often find a number of items in my purse that others may think unnecessary. My purse often doubles as a diaper and snack bag. Unless you adhere to the practice of emptying your bag daily, you understand exactly how heavy bags can be. Heavy bags tug on the neck and spine. They can cause a great deal of pain.

The Shoes

Nothing closes the deal on a great outfit like a beautiful pair of shoes. Heels are my go-to shoe of choice. But there is some pain associated with wearing heels for a long period of time. Some of you are reading this thinking it doesn’t apply to anyone except women. This is not the case. Of course, heels can be one of the main causes to back problems, but they aren’t the only one. Any shoe that alters your posture or ability to walk unobstructed can cause problems for the back. Also, any shoe that fits uncomfortably on the foot can cause back pain.

This information is not about turning anyone's nose up to style. Rather, it is about finding a solution to the pain that may come as you enjoy sporting the latest and greatest styles available. Other than emptying your bag daily and rotating what shoes you wear, it is helpful to add a chiropractor to your routine. Your chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic can often undo the painful damage that may be caused by the fashion you love. With more than 370 locations nationwide you are sure to find one near you.
