Enjoy Holiday Treats Without the Weight Gain

By Virginia Laird

There are many aspects to the holidays season, including a wide variety of goodies. These guilty pleasures can cause many to stress over the idea of gaining weight, which is not uncommon this time of year. Many across the nation will fall victim to holiday pounds while enjoying all the scrumptious delicacies that accompany the holidays. Fortunately, healthcare professionals have offered many tips to help overcome the battle of the bulge while allowing some room to enjoy the treats. These tips include:

  • Exercise is necessary
  • Avoid high calorie beverages
  • Exercise the rule of the tablespoon

Exercise is Necessary

Exercise is a great way to burn some calories any time of the year. During the holidays, when you know you will be confronted with a plethora of high calorie goodies and foods, it is best to prioritize time to exercise. This does not mean you need to spend hours at the gym. Take a yoga class, try cycling, or simply go for a jog. No matter what exercise you decide to tackle, making sure to get in something that can help you avoid putting on weight as you indulge in all the scrumptious food of the season. Research suggests that as little as 30 minutes of exercise three to four times a week is enough to help keep weight in check.

Avoid High-Calorie Beverages

Hot cocoa is my favorite beverage during the holiday season. It is even better with a few Andes Mints melted into the concoction. However, this drink is full of calories. Nutrition specialists remind patients that consuming beverages with a high calorie content is one way of losing sight of weight maintenance and fitness goals. There is simply no comparison: Water is the best beverage to drink when trying to watch your weight and count your calories.

Exercise the Rule of the Tablespoon

The rule of the tablespoon is as easy as they come. Weight loss specialists recommend this rule to patients as a means to enjoy the array of holiday treats without losing track of fitness goals. You simply get to try everything you want in the portion size of a tablespoon. This allows you to enjoy your holiday treats in moderation.

As you head out the door to your next holiday gathering, plan to choose water and save the calories for the sweets and treats. Happy Holidays!
