Eat Healthier at Restaurants with Some Simple Tricks

By Brandi Swieter

Restaurants are popular because it's sometimes easier to have a meal served to you rather than make one yourself. Their options are not always the healthiest though, making it imperative for people looking to eat healthier to know some tricks for choosing the right foods. A few simple tricks will help you eat healthier and make more conscious decisions about the foods being put into the body.

Skip the Buffet

Most buffets aren't strictly so. It's still possible to order from the menu and choose one meal. No one has an obligation to go up and grab food from the buffet line. It's best to skip the buffet to avoid overeating. Avoid restaurants that are buffet-only when possible. Anyone who needs to dine at a buffet, such as for a family gathering, should choose a salad and some fruits and vegetables and avoid the fattening food options and desserts.

Choose Water

One of the first things the waitress will do at a restaurant is ask what everyone wants to drink. Tea, soda pop, lemonade, milk, and even alcoholic beverages are commonly served at many places. Avoid these. Beverages add extra calories to an already calorie-filled meal. Choose water every time to get a drink that quenches thirst without adding sugar or calories.

Ask for the Nutrition Facts

Though restaurants may not have an actual label for their meals like foods at the store do, they should have some sort of idea regarding the amount of sodium and calories in their dishes. Anyone wanting to count their calories should ask for the nutrition facts.

Order Without the Bun

Burgers and wraps are commonly served at restaurants. If one of these is your meal of choice, be sure to order it without the bun or tortilla. It will drastically reduce the calorie content. If you still prefer to eat it with the bread, at least order it whole grain to make it a healthier option.

Eat Half

Most restaurants serve their meals on rather large plates. The food comes in much bigger portions than any one person needs. Any time you go out, vow to eat only half the meal. This cuts down calories while also providing a meal for another day.

It can be difficult to find healthy alternatives when dining out, but it's not impossible. A few changes can make a big difference in the meal you're eating. Avoiding buffets and drinking water are two of the biggest pieces of advice people should follow.
