How to Eliminate Germs From Your Home
By Genevieve Cunningham
Perhaps you haven’t heard, but flu season is in full swing. In fact, both strains of the flu are rearing their ugly heads in schools, businesses, and homes around the country. While the flu is usually a disease that runs its course and does little permanent damage, most people are still interested in keeping it away in the first place. No one likes to be sick, and the best way to stay healthy is to focus on prevention. To keep you and your family well this flu season (or anytime!), take a look at these simple tips.
Clean Those Oft-Touched Areas
Any space that gets a lot of hand touching should probably be washed on a regular basis, especially during flu season. These areas might include doorknobs, tabletops, countertops, remotes, computers and devices, and handles to any drawers. Wipe them down with water, and then follow that up with a disinfectant. During flu season, you may consider doing this multiple times a day. And if you have children, consider including backpacks, lunch boxes, and other items that make the trip from home to school and back again.
Stock Your Home Full of Nutritious Foods
Good foods can’t completely wipe away germs, but they can certainly make it easier for your body to fight them off. Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains are excellent choices for keeping the body healthy. If possible, stay away from highly processed foods or foods that are packed with sugar. These provide very little nutritional value, and they may actually harm your body’s immune system when eaten in excess.
Keep Up the Cleaning
Now is not the time to let your home get super dirty. If you want to keep germs away, clean every single day. You don’t have to scrub the bathtub every day or wash the sheets every day, but you should definitely include these tasks regularly. Sweeping the floors, wiping down ceiling fans and walls, cleaning the stove top, and washing the dishes should all be done daily, at least at this time of year. This leaves less time for germs to attach themselves and stick around, and more clean, fresh air for you to breathe.
It’s not possible to avoid all germs all of the time. That would be next to impossible! But it’s definitely possible to be proactive about keeping your home and your family healthy. Use these tips to give you a head start, and keep those pesky illnesses away as much as possible.
