Breakfast Foods You Can Dismiss from the Table
By Sara Butler
Breakfast is an important meal for a lot of people, but simply eating something in the morning is only half of the battle. If you start off your day with the wrong fuel it can have a detrimental impact on your body for the rest of the day. A lot of the foods on the market today that are fast, easy and accessible for breakfast are anything but nutritious and healthy. Here are some breakfast foods you would do better to avoid in the morning!
The Breakfast Sandwich
Breakfast sandwiches seem like the perfect package – a little protein and a few carbs to start off your day. But most of the time these breakfast sandwiches are packed full of sodium and fat, along with highly processed meats that can be a danger to your health.
You can easily make you own from an egg, an English muffin, and some spinach or avocado. It’ll be much better for you and keep you fuller for longer.
Cereal
Cereal is easy and quick, but it’s also got a lot of hidden sugar in it and other highly processed carbs. Most have little to no fiber and no real nutritional value as a food. You’d be better served by having some berries with plain yogurt for breakfast. If you miss the crunch, throw on a handful of a high-fiber cereal for good measure.
Flavored Yogurt
Speaking of yogurt, flavored yogurt is not very good for you. In order to make it taste good, it is often inundated with high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners so you will want to eat it. Plus, the sugar and yeast pretty much negate any positive impact the probiotics in yogurt has. If you love yogurt, go for plain yogurt or Greek yogurt and add some raw almonds, chia or flax seeds. They’ll make it a well-rounded breakfast choice.
Egg Whites
Egg whites might seem healthy but in truth, they are nutritionally pointless. They have a bit of protein, but that’s about it. The yolks in the eggs are the real golden child of nutrition. They have all the fat-soluble vitamins your body needs and good fats that help to keep your blood sugar from spiking. Don’t leave out the yolk!
Did you find any of these foods surprising? Just remember, something may seem healthy but if you look a little closer it may not be the best choice!
