Frozen Yogurt or Ice Cream for Your Health?

By Sara Butler

When people hear the term frozen yogurt, they often think it’s a healthier alternative to ice cream. After all, it’s yogurt, and yogurt is good for you! Or is it? Well, there are some advantages to choosing frozen yogurt over ice cream, but they may not be as good as you think. Here are the pros and cons to frozen yogurt and what you should choose for your frozen treat.

What is Frozen Yogurt

Frozen yogurt isn’t simply yogurt that has been frozen. It’s made in much the same way as ice cream, but instead of cream, it contains milk. The main ingredients of frozen yogurt are:

  • Milk
  • Yogurt cultures
  • Sugar

Many frozen yogurt brands also contain stabilizers and flavorings to improve their texture and taste.

Frozen yogurt can be very low in protein and fat, depending on the type of milk used, but very high in sugar – which is what you have to be on the lookout for. Make sure you look at the nutritional information on the package to see what's in it!

The Health Benefits

Frozen yogurt does have some advantages over ice cream. It has beneficial bacteria and nutrients in it, including:

  • Good bacteria – Frozen yogurt is a good source of probiotics, just check to make sure it contains “live cultures.”
  • Lower levels of lactose – If you have issues with lactose, then frozen yogurt might be a good thing for you. The probiotics in yogurt help it to be more digestible for people who are lactose intolerant.
  • Nutrients for bone health – Frozen yogurt is a good source of calcium, but remember you can also get this from regular yogurt.
  • May be lower in calories – Quite often you can save a few calories by having frozen yogurt instead of ice cream, but that’s only if you keep your portions under control and watch your toppings.

Is it as Good as Regular Yogurt

Frozen yogurt often contains lots of added sugars, unlike plain yogurt you can buy in the store and sweeten with berries. But even some brands of sweetened yogurt will have fewer calories than frozen yogurt. If you’re looking for a healthy yogurt in your life, it’s always going to be better to go with plain yogurt over anything else, especially if you’re watching your sugar intake.
