Fight Back Against Headaches -- Naturally!
By Sara Butler
Headaches are an annoyance far too many people are familiar with. Mild headaches can make any day more challenging while the worst headaches can leave you incapacitated for hours. Luckily, there are things you can do to try to alleviate headaches that don't involve taking medication. Here are some ways to relieve your headaches naturally.
Eat Often
Sometimes a headache can be triggered by skipping meals. That's why you should make sure that you are having something to eat, even if it's simply a snack, every two to three hours. This will help to keep your blood sugar steady throughout the day and keep headaches in check if you tend to suffer from them.
Eat More Magnesium
The American Migraine Foundation has done some research related to magnesium levels in those that suffer from headaches. What they found is that some people who gets headaches regularly have lower levels of magnesium in their body, which is why it's important to make sure you eat plenty of foods high in magnesium to help keep headaches at bay.
Some foods you may want to add include:
- Avocados
- Spinach
- Flaxseeds
- Pumpkin seeds
- Brown rice
- Dark chocolate
- Quinoa
- Lima beans
- Bananas
- Black beans
Added bonus: These foods are good for you, too, for more than just keeping headaches away.
Drink Water
Perhaps one of the simplest things you can do to help stave off headaches is to make sure you're properly hydrated each day. Dehydration leads to headaches in a lot of people. If you develop a headache, one of the easiest things you can do is simply to drink a glass of water and see if it helps.
Of course, you should be sipping water regularly throughout the day to help keep your body hydrated.
Reduce Screen Time
Screen time can lead to tension in the neck and shoulders, which can lead to headaches. That's why it's vital to watch how much time you're spending on devices.
You should make sure to take frequent breaks from all your electronic devices, even the ones you must use for work. This will help to rest your eyes and break you out of the posture you may be sitting in that can contribute to tension and headaches. Watching how much screen time you get before bed will also help with getting enough sleep -- another contributor to headaches!
