Chiropractic Care May Help With Chronic Headaches
By Paul Rothbart
Unfortunately, we must endure headaches from time to time. They can be very painful and very distracting. Most people take some pain medication and are done with it. But chronic tension headaches or migraines are a bigger problem. You can only take so much medication without the drugs potentially inflicted side effects or causing problems. To reduce the frequency of chronic headaches, you must get to the source of the problem. A chiropractor may be of great help. Here are some tips for dealing with chronic headaches.
Take Frequent Breaks
Taking breaks is always important, especially for those who sit in front of a computer all day or look at a cellphone. This can cause eyestrain and tension in the neck and shoulders. It's a sure recipe for a headache. At least every hour, get up from your desk and get away from the screen for a minute or two. Take a longer break of 20 minutes or so three or four times during the workday. Put away your phone unless you need it. Checking social media constantly has no real benefit and can add to stress and tension.
Change Your Sleep Position
Spending eight hours with your neck bent at an extreme angle will almost surely cause you to wake up with a headache. Sleeping this way regularly can make headaches frequent. Buy a pillow that cradles your head and neck and keeps them in a comfortable position. It's also a good idea to find your optimal sleep position. This could be on your side, back, or stomach. You will move during the night, but try to start in the best position. Your body will naturally return to it as you sleep. This can help prevent neck pain and headaches all day.
Manage Stress
Eliminating stress from your life is not feasible, but you can manage it better. Use deep breathing exercises or medication to soothe yourself and relax. Seek help with big problems from those who can help. Try to tackle one thing at a time to avoid becoming overwhelmed. Excess stress is one of the leading causes of chronic headaches.
See a Chiropractor
Chiropractic care is not just for backs. There are many issues a chiropractor may be able to help with and chronic headaches are on that list. A chiropractor will perform an exam and find any subluxations in your back and neck. An adjustment can be very helpful in reducing the incidence of chronic headaches. Regular chiropractic visits may help you continue to avoid tension headaches. Chiropractors also work drug-free, so there are no side effects.
Chronic headaches can disrupt any activity and they don't feel good. Consider a visit to The Joint Chiropractic. No appointment is needed. You may find that along with these tips, regular chiropractic care lessens the number of headaches you experience and allows you to be more productive and happier.
