Nutritional Tips for Chiropractic Patients
By Sara Butler
Your immune system is waging war every day on your behalf in order to protect you. So, why not give back a little through nutrition? Here are a few tips that every chiropractic patient should know in order to help keep their immune system healthy and functioning optimally.
Get Your Vitamin D, Y’all!
Vitamin D is essential for building strong bones and teeth because it helps your body to absorb calcium. If you don’t get enough Vitamin D you risk developing bones that are soft and brittle, a condition called rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
Vitamin D also helps your body to protect itself from chronic disease and illness by helping to improve your body’s response to infections. It increases your body’s production of something called antimicrobial peptides, an important factor in immunity.
Everyone has different needs, so talk to your chiropractor about how much Vitamin D you may actually need and how to get it!
Eat All of Your Vegetables
Mother knows best, and when she told you to eat all of your vegetables she wasn’t just trying to annoy you. Vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli have been shown to help inhibit the growth of cancer cells. They also have been shown to assist your immune system in acting more effectively – so do what your mom said!
It’s no secret that alcohol isn’t a health food. And while most chiropractic patients are very proactive when it comes to health, they may not realize the impact too much alcohol can have.
Alcohol can cause your immune function to plummet, which can then cause you to be more susceptible to illness. The use of alcohol has also been linked to cancer. If you’re looking to help your immune system to function at its absolute best, then you may want to pass on even just a small amount of alcohol.
If you’re ever interested in other ways nutrition can have a direct impact on your health, you should discuss it with your chiropractor. They are loaded with tons of information about nutrition and how to get everything your body needs outside of the chiropractor’s office in order to function at its very best. So bring it up next time you’re in for an adjustment at The Joint Chiropractic!
