Stay Motivated to Exercise ... Don't Hibernate!
By Donna Kostiew
Winter is upon us and the days are getting colder and colder. It’s a time when most people just want to come home after work and hibernate in the warmth of their home. It is also a time when our motivation to hit the gym or go for a run seems to disappear as quickly as the midday sun. So it is especially important to find ways to get in a workout when what we really want to do is to get into those brand-new cozy pajamas.
Hibernation Mode … Deactivate!
You are not an animal, so take off those fuzzy teddy-bear pajamas and stop pretending to hibernate in front of the TV with your cup of hot chocolate and plate of cookies. And if it’s really too cold for you to get to the gym or to go on your morning run, then here are some suggestions on how to find some alternative exercise options that may just get you moving.
Clean your house – Honestly, I always seem to get a little sweaty when I deep clean my house. Vacuuming all of the rooms and stairs, cleaning the floors, carrying piles of laundry from the bedrooms, sterilizing the bathrooms … it really is hard work and you usually end up burning quite a few of calories.
Hit the mall – Whether you like shopping or not, the mall is warm and you can get in a ton of steps by walking … and walking … and did I say walking? Experts recommend that we get in at least 10,000 steps a day so the mall is perfect when it is cold or snowy outside. And you get to people watch.
Take advantage of the commercials – When you get home from work and you know nothing will peel you away from your favorite TV show, don’t change into those pajamas right away. Instead, throw on some workout clothes and use the time that the commercials come on for an easy mini-exercise routine. Do some push-ups, crunches, squats, planks, burpees or anything else you can think of. Then repeat during each of the commercial breaks. You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.
Grab a friend, some mittens and a scarf – Yes, it may be cold outside, but when you are with a friend or a significant other, somehow the reality of the cold weather just seems to disappear. Take a walk, shovel some snow ... heck, you can even have a snowball fight. Just keep your body moving.
Now don’t get me wrong, I totally agree that there are some legit reasons to want to hibernate during the winter season … bad holiday music, the crazy aunt coming to visit for a week, our children … but don’t let any of that get in the way of staying fit and healthy. Remember, bathing suit season is always right around the corner.
