Should You Go Organic?

By Genevieve Cunningham

When it comes to finding advice about living a healthy life, the tips are rampant. Some of the most common include exercising regularly, avoiding excessive stress, and … going organic. But is going organic all it’s cracked up to be? Or can you skip this expensive step and still reap the same benefits? Take a look at the ins and outs of organic eating, and whether or not you should make the switch in order to live a healthier life.

What is Classified as Organic?

Organic food is food that is grown without chemical intervention or hormone supplements. In addition, organic food farmers generally work to conserve the earth as well as the water used to grow such plants. All organically labeled food must pass certain qualifications set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture. All organic food must come from an organic farm where conservation and less pollution are key aspects of farm life.

Is It Healthier?

This is definitely debatable. Many people argue that the pesticides and other chemicals used on fruits and vegetables are bad for our bodies. People claim that the antibiotics and hormones given to animals can be passed on through the meat that we eat. Can they? It’s certainly possible, but experts are beginning to believe that it might not be in the great quantities originally thought. Organic food might be a bit healthier for our bodies, but that doesn’t negate that normal food can be healthy as well, and can still help you achieve a healthy body and lifestyle.

Is It Worth the Cost?

In a lot of places, organic food is more expensive than other foods found in your typical grocery store. While there are some places to get organic foods at a good price (think farmers markets or local gardens), the consensus is that organic costs just a bit more. If you’re a serious health nut and you have the money to spare, this little extra can be worth it. If you live on a tight budget, it can be just as beneficial to buy good quality foods from your local grocer.

If you have the desire to go organic, go for it! But is it necessary to get healthy? Probably not. When it comes to healthy eating, just do your research and choose wisely. With good choices and the right knowledge, you can enhance your health, improve your body, and feel like your best self yet.
