Here's How to Prepare for Upcoming Flu Season
By Genevieve Cunningham
It's not quite flu season yet. We're still enjoying the thick of summer. But it won't be long before the fall season is in full swing. Kids will go back to school. Schedules will be turned upside down. And cold and flu season will come in with a vengeance. Most of the time, we don't even think about colds and the flu until the season is upon us. But what if we changed our approach? What if we gave it some thought right now? What if we were prepared for flu season? Would it make a difference in our health? There's only one way to find out! If you would like to prepare yourself and your family for the upcoming flu season, take a look at these tips to start today.
Think About Your Flu Shot
Not everyone is a fan of the flu shot, and that's OK. But there's no doubt that it's effective -- in some seasons. Sometimes doctors miss the mark and the efficacy is low. But other seasons, the flu shot is excellent at preventing illness. And if you have vulnerable people in your household -- babies, elderly, or immunocompromised -- then it's especially important to give it some thought. Go ahead and talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of getting the shot. This will give you plenty of time to weigh your options, make a plan, and follow through when the time comes.
Start Collecting Sanitizer and Soap
One of the best ways to prevent the cold and flu is by avoiding and eliminating germs. While it's hard to avoid all germs, it's certainly possible to take measurable actions in eliminating them. Go ahead and stock up on items such as hand sanitizer, hand soap, disinfectant, and even tissues. These items should be ready in your home (and even on the go!) so that you can keep the spreading of germs to a minimum.
Start Boosting Your Immune System
Another great prevention step is all about your body. When you do come into contact with germs -- which will inevitably happen at one point or another -- you need a strong immune system to help fight them off. You can start prepping your immune system right now so that it's at top performance level when the fall rolls around. How? Make sure that you're eating a healthy diet with plenty of Vitamin C. Talk to your doctor about a supplement game plan, which might include things such as elderberry and echinacea. The stronger your immune system, the easier it is to fight off germs. Prepare now, and you'll be glad when the first round of sniffles hits your area.
You can't always avoid the flu. Germs are everywhere! But you can certainly prepare to the best of your ability. Start using these tips now, and you may be able to avoid the bulk of illness this upcoming season for a healthier home and family.
