Subluxations and Scrubs: Back Pain, Doc?

By Krista Elliott

I have a lot of admiration for anybody who works in the field of healthcare. But today, my hat goes off to surgeons. After studying for approximately a gazillion years, they work long hours, function on very little sleep (and a lot of manky, hospital-cafeteria coffee), and work under a ton of pressure. These are people who know that their skill can determine whether somebody lives or dies, and they also know that during even the smoothest operations, everything can fly to pieces in an instant.

Besides the emotional and mental demands of the job, it's a very physically taxing profession. Standing for long periods of time with a bent neck, while concentrating intently on putting somebody's face back together ... well, it can really take it out of a person. Add in the twisting, bending, and the fitful sleep caught on a lumpy futon in the doctor's lounge, and you've got all the ingredients for muscle strains and painful subluxations.

And the nurses who work in the operating room? Yeah, this all applies to you, too.

A Prescription for Pain Relief

So, if your scrubs are accompanied by subluxations, you may be reluctant to turn to painkillers, as they could affect your alertness. What then, can you do to get some relief? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Try to maintain good posture when working, however difficult that may be.
  • Wear supportive, non-slip hospital shoes, and replace them regularly.
  • Consider doing some stretching before and after your shift.
  • Maintain a healthy weight, to limit the burden placed on your spine.
  • Make exercise a part of your daily routine. This will keep your muscles strong and joints flexible.
  • Take mini relaxation breaks to keep stress at bay. Perhaps do some yoga or meditate.
  • Try to fit in as much sleep, whenever and wherever, possible.

And most importantly, you should fit in regular chiropractic care from the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic. Routine chiropractic treatment will help ensure that your body is at its best alignment, helping to prevent pain, and improve your range of motion and flexibility (which are important when you have a scalpel in hand!) And if you already suffer from a sore back, which is probably the case, a visit to The Joint Chiropractic can help relieve your pain without the use of alertness-altering medication, helping get you back on your feet and feeling great.
