5 Chiropractic Tips for a Healthy Spine

By Brandi Goodman

Spinal pain is incredibly common yet often overlooked. People everywhere need to worry about their spinal health if they want to ensure good health overall. Without a properly functioning spine, the brain, nervous system, and rest of the body are not able to properly communicate and maintain wellness. Some tips from the chiropractor can help ensure you keep a healthy spine.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Too much weight can cause immense pressure on the spine. This will lead to pain and problems. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best pieces of advice anyone can provide. Losing weight could take some of the pressure off and help the spine be able to get some relief from pain and be more flexible than before.

Sleep on Your Side

Both back and stomach sleeping can quickly lead to spinal pain. It's often best to sleep on your side. A pillow between the knees is a huge help as well. It takes some of the pressure off the spine and allows for a better night's rest. Those who experience pain even in this position should sleep in whatever way is comfortable to them. As everyone is different, what works for most may not work for all.

Never Look Down at a Screen

Small screens on our phones and tablets are hazardous to our health. Looking down at them for long periods can cause serious strain to the neck, and in turn, the back. It's advised to never look down at a screen like this. Instead, bring the device to eye level and look at it straight on for a reduced chance for developing pain.

Lift With the Legs

Lifting and carrying heavy items can do damage to the back and body. People tend to bend down at the waist and pick something up without a second thought. Even a light item can cause strain on the spine in this position. The best choice is to bend at the knees and lower yourself to the ground to grab the item in question. It is important to then lift with the legs, putting more pressure on the knees and legs instead of the back.

Do Not Slouch While Sitting

Slouching on the couch in front of the TV is a common practice for many. It shouldn't be. Slouching while sitting can hurt the shoulders and the spine. It's best to sit upright with proper posture while maintaining the natural curve of the spine in the lower back. You may need to place a pillow behind your back to help with this.

Follow these tips and you should have a healthy spine that allows your body to move and thrive. Any time you experience spinal discomfort, be sure to head to The Joint Chiropractic for an immediate inspection to see just what the issue might be. Removing a joint restriction could be all it takes to put the spine back in alignment and leave you feeling well.
