Chiropractic Tips for Holiday Race Day
By Brandi Goodman
Holiday races are common in many locations. Most raise money or collect goods for the community to offer a Christmas to its members that some may not be able to afford otherwise. If you plan on participating on holiday race day, be sure to keep a few chiropractic tips in mind to make the most of it.
Make Sure to Stretch
Beginner runners just participating in their first holiday event may not realize that they should be stretching well before their race. You need to make sure to stretch out your joints if you have any hope of making it through the race with as little pain as possible. Failing to warm up before you run can quickly lead to side aches, painful calves, and injury. Stretch out the legs well in the days leading up to the race and especially right before running.
Drink Water
You need to drink water on race day. It will fuel your body and give your joints the hydration they need. You may even want to carry a water bottle with you during the race so you can refuel as needed. Being properly hydrated can help to keep your joints flexible and prevent injury.
Choose the Right Shoes
Never run a race in an old pair of tennis shoes and definitely don't wear flats. You want a newer pair of running shoes that are comfortable, fit well, and have cushioned insoles that help to absorb the impact of the hard sidewalk you'll most likely be running on. If you want to prevent feet and leg pain on race day, then wearing the right shoes is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
Get Chiropractic Before the Race
Your race may be early in the morning, not leaving enough time to get chiropractic care. At least go the day before so you can be sure your body is in top shape to be able to run. Your chiropractor may be able to remove a joint restriction or subluxation causing you discomfort. An adjustment can ensure your spine is in alignment and you'll be less likely to get injured during your race.
Racing for a good cause is a great thing but just be sure you're considering your health in the process. Keep some chiropractic tips in mind to avoid some of the pain that can develop when running long distances and on hard surfaces. You'll run better with these considerations.
