Easy Ways to Prevent Back Pain at Home

By Stepy Kamei

It's never a good time for anyone when back pain comes around and rears its ugly head. In terms of how long it may last, it can present itself as an acute or chronic issue, with sharp, radiating pain or more of a dull, persistent ache. Sometimes, you can pinpoint the exact moment you felt the pain come on, yet other times, it feels like a completely random occurrence.

When it comes down to it, there are all kinds of ways in which the back, and more specifically, the spinal column, can be susceptible to injury. This simply means that it's important to take the time to address your current lifestyle and habits in order to see where you may be making yourself vulnerable to back pain. With that in mind, keep on reading to see how chiropractic care, along with other important lifestyle changes, can radically reduce your chances of developing any sort of back pain later on down the line.

Move Mindfully Throughout the Day

The body is meant to move, and a body that receives some form of regular movement and exercise tends to be less vulnerable to instances of back stiffness and pain.

This does not necessarily mean you should immediately start lifting heavy weights every day, multiple times a day. It's simply about keeping up a moderately and safely active lifestyle. If you are able to fit in some cardio and/or weight training throughout the week, this isn't a bad idea. However, even just doing a short and slow yoga routine every morning, or going for a walk in the evenings before dinner, can be enough to at least reduce your chances of developing back pain. That's because a sedentary lifestyle decreases circulation and flexibility along the joints and spinal column over time, leading to an increased likelihood that you'll strain the area.

Avoid Common Triggers of Back Pain

There are some common triggers of back pain that you can take steps right now to change. For instance, if you often wake up with neck or shoulder pain, you may need to consider switching out your pillow for one that suits your specific sleeping posture.

Alternatively, if you find yourself wanting a back rub at the end of a long day at work, you should look into adjusting your work station. Make sure your chair is comfortable, offers a cushion for lumbar support, and is positioned at a height that is level with your desk and keyboard. As for any screens you need to look at, be sure they are at eye level as well, so you aren't craning your neck at unnatural angles in order to get a decent view.

Visit a Chiropractor Regularly

Finally, you should consider seeing a doctor of chiropractic on a regular basis. Chiropractic is a natural and holistic form of preventative healthcare, designed to treat the entire body from the inside out, without relying on medication or procedures. Chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic clinics are trained to use safe techniques involving the hands in order to bring the spinal column into its proper alignment. A properly aligned spine is one that's more fortified against the threat of back pain.
