The Surprising Benefits of Playing Horseshoes

There are probably plenty of things on the list of what somebody hasn’t done.  Most people are creatures of habit.  Even those who say they do their own thing usually don’t.  That being said, playing horseshoes may be on the list of those things that many people have not done.  It could be time to consider adding it as a pretty good family activity.  It has some surprisingly good benefits to physical health without being terribly taxing on the body.

It Is Actually A Little Exercise

Especially for someone who has not been tearing up the treadmill, playing horseshoes could serve as a little bit of exercise.  People have to start somewhere, and running right away is not wise.  Whatever is done in the way of activity needs to be gradual.  Even horseshoes is cardio for a couch potato.  There is some standing, walking around, and bending involved.  Tossing the horseshoes provides a small amount of activity and is likely to raise the heart rate slightly in someone who is sedentary.  For someone who is active, it still provides a little warm-up time.

There Is Some Thinking And Skill Involved

The game of horseshoes is a little more complex than simply throwing the shoes.  There must be a certain amount of strategy and knowledge of force and angles needed.  The hand-eye coordination necessary to be successful in tossing effectively takes some development.  Those who try the game become aware quickly that it is not quite as easy as it looks to play a series of games and do well.  Just tossing can become pretty frustrating.

It Is Good For Social Interaction

It is actually difficult to play horseshoes and avoid interacting with others.  There will be conversation as well as down time, particularly if there is a sizeable group playing.  That group could include people barely old enough to pick up the shoes all the way up to people who can barely pick them up due to advanced age.  It can be great for a family activity or a group of friends looking for a way to challenge each other.  It is also pretty non-threatening and can be done even by someone who is unable to stand.  If you have been looking for something a little bit different for an activity, try horseshoes.  A set can be purchased at almost any common discount store, and just about anybody can participate.
