Lack Of Preparation In Hot Weather Can Be Serious
By Tom Herrin
People make plenty of mistakes. Being unprepared in the heat can have results that may have a major impact on health. Many people these days work, play, and spend most of their time indoors in climate controlled environments. Gone are the days for most people when they spent time outdoors and became accustomed to dealing with the heat. Dealing with excessive temperatures can be extremely taxing on the body. Without proper planning, the body can suffer from the inability to cope with these changes.
Getting Too Much Water Is Near Impossible
Many times people think they are drinking plenty of water. Very often, it is not the case at all. In the higher temperatures, fluid loss happens much faster than realized. There are times when the loss rate is higher than the rate at which people can replace water. Because of this kind of risk, it is necessary to take in water at regular intervals in order to prepare for such a high rate of loss. Alcohol is something that should be avoided at all costs due to the dangers it adds to dehydration. Sports drinks can be good but should be used as a supplement to water. Plain water should make up the majority of fluids that are taken in.
Shade Versus Sun
If people want to get outside, they probably want to be in the sun some. A huge mistake is made when people get out in direct sunlight in the middle of the day. That really indicates a lack of preparation. It can be extremely dangerous. It is better to be in the direct sun in early morning or late afternoon. As for being outside in the middle of the day, it is best to find shade with open areas around. This allows more airflow and a greater chance of cooling.
Dress For The Occasion
In the case of very warm temperatures, the occasion is hot. Lightweight, light colored, and loose fitting clothes are the key. Regardless of fashion, wearing breathable clothes is critical to health and safety. It is also a good idea to wear a hat with a brim all the way around. This can provide some shade to the face and neck. I prefer a straw Panama style hat. It has good circulation throughout the hat. The heat can be treacherous and take people by surprise. This is totally avoidable with preparation. If you plan well, you can enjoy the outdoors with no complications. Think ahead, start with small increments, and build up slowly. You will be glad you did.
