Include Apples for a Healthy Diet

By Tom Herrin

When looking for something good to enrich a diet, you need not look beyond the produce section of any market.  An always great addition to any daily menu is apples.  Most people like apples, but many simply don’t think to add them to their diet.  For some, they may be the occasional item purchased because people tend to stock up with so many ready-to-eat foods.  Times may have changed, but apples can still do plenty of good things for health.

They May Help Prevent Some Cancers

The high fiber content in apples makes them a natural for colon health.  They are known to help in prevention of colon cancer.  They contain substances that seem to reduce the risk of breast cancer and even lung cancer.  The antioxidants in apples ae believed to have the ability to help with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.  When the inclusion of foods can have an impact of cancers, it seems that they are well worthwhile for inclusion in a diet.

They May Aid Weight Loss

Since they are a bulky food that contains a large amount of water, they can be a great thing to add when people are simply trying to reduce calories.  They are believed to be able to negate the effects of many of the foods that may be eaten after them.  Most of the time, when I have tried to begin to cut calories, I have eaten apples with my lunch.  For me, they seem to help me to feel full enough to avoid hunger but not so full that I felt weighted down.  They also seem to offer enough to be able to be able to satisfy that desire for something sweet so I don’t end up looking for something I really should avoid.

They Are a Delicious Food

The bottom line is that apples are a good tasting food.  There are so many ways they may be enjoyed that you won’t have to get into a rut to enjoy them.  We have sometimes cut them up, added brown brown sugar and maybe cinnamon, and tossed them into a microwave.  It is an easy shortcut to make a sort of baked apple treat.  Whole apples are always good.  They tend to clean the teeth as well, so they are especially good during the middle of the day.  Check out your local market.  There are plenty of kinds to try.
