Water Exercises Can Protect while Working the Body

By Tom Herrin

There is plenty of reason to be concerned while working out.  Most people are in fairly desperate need of getting some kind of regular exercise.  Too many jobs are sedentary, and kids in school spend large amounts of time simply sitting.  The body needs to be worked in order to be more efficient, but certain care must be taken to avoid injury for those involved.  For those who are not getting enough regular activity, they must work up slowly to avoid overstressing the body. With the growing older population, there are many people who must guard body parts that are more likely to become excessively worn.  Exercising in the water can deal effectively with many of these issues.

It Can Build Strength

Resistance in the water is far greater than the air.  On top of that, the water is moving in multiple directions as people move.  This provides resistance in many more places as they exercise. It is believed that resistance in water may be as much as 42 times greater than air.  This means muscles that normally get very little work during most exercises would get much more, providing better overall development.

It Is Low-Impact

Particularly when joints and other parts are more prone to injury, exercising in the water can protect them from impact that can cause injury.  The water supports the body weight, leaving the muscles with the opportunity to work without the frequent damage that accompanies the exercise. For those with problems such as arthritis, or similar issues, it can provide great protection.  It is often considered ideal or rehabilitation from injuries.

It Has Some Unique Properties

Water has some benefits that are hard to beat.  Besides the fact that watching it can be soothing, it also seems to have that ability to lower blood pressure.  It can help to slow the resting heart rate as well. Since the heart is like anything else in the body, this can save wear on it.  When you exercise in the water, it helps to cool the body so that there is less risk of overheating. If some of these things are concerns to you, exercising in water may be just what will help you to achieve your goals of exercise with less chance of injury.
