Brief Workouts May Still Be Great

By Tom Herrin

For many years, lots of people have felt that a workout program needed to be all out.  In other words, if they wanted to get good exercise, it should be a full program. This meant spending enough time doing the activity so that they could reap the full benefits, but this may be old-school thinking.  As people have gained more knowledge of how to improve physical conditioning, they have realized that there are some cases in which short workouts can be every bit as productive as those long and dreaded ones.  The really good thing about this is that, by being more efficient, they may be able to save precious time.

Do Something You Enjoy

Some people love running.  Others would rather not.  For those who do, running can be a good way to shorten some of that workout time while still providing a valuable benefit.  One study from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, a person running seven minutes per day can reduce their chance of dying of heart disease by 45 percent.  This is a pretty significant improvement for less than 10 minutes of exercise.

You May Stay Indoors

All people are not into getting outdoors and being active.  While many may choose biking outdoors, some prefer the seclusion that can be available when they ride an exercise bike.  This may be done in a bedroom, family room, patio, or wherever.  According to a Japanese study, participants showed a marked improvement in their moods after riding such a bike for only 10 minutes.  While this may not produce huge results, it can be a great way to boost physical and emotional health.  In the long term, this is what most people really seek.  When they feel better about themselves, they feel better overall.

Shifting Plans Does Not Mean Changing Priorities

I enjoy working out and do so whenever I can.  The problem is that there are many times that I simply can't because of other demands on my time.  When this is the case, I have learned that if I have a good plan, I can still make some good progress.  If I really get committed, I know I can move forward in much less time than I have spent in the past on these exercises.  Even if I am not into high-intensity workouts, I know I can improve my conditioning in less time.
