Shift Work May Be Tough on a Normal Life

By Tom Herrin

Most people tend to take life for granted.  It is pretty easy when they have a routine of some kind that they keep.  Whatever they are accustomed to doing can become so matter-of-fact that they begin to believe it is the way everyone lives.  For those who work some kind of shift, life may be a little distorted.  Since they do things such as sleep during the day, they may actually have a different perspective on how other people live.  Accepting this as normal may have them believing that everyone lives that way.  And in Las Vegas, perhaps more than any other U.S. city, many people do live that way. Today, an increasing number of Americans may be working shifts of some kind.  Many of these are unavoidable as there are countless stores or casinos open all night, as well as medical facilities and other public services.

Plan a Good Eye-opener

It has been suggested that those who work shifts should do a few things to prepare themselves for that daily routine.  One is that they take a walk of some kind before they begin that shift.  If possible, it may be best to do so in the sunlight.  If they are going to drink caffeinated drinks, they should do this in the first part of the shift and avoid doing so later.  Too much of this can prevent them from sleeping well.  It may also be a good practice to take short breaks and move around.

Training May Make a Difference

Those who work shifts often have a different kind of lifestyle.  Some of this may be due to the fact that many of them are sleeping when others are awake.  Some other considerations may be for them to be sure to block off time for 10 hours of time in which they can rest, sleep, or whatever.  Another may be to train workers about the precautions to take regarding shift work.  The key is to protect health.

You Are Not Alone

If you are one of those who must work shifts, you are likely one of millions.  It is a way of life that may well remain for many.  If we are to guard our health in such circumstances, we must be aware of our situation and act accordingly.  While I have not been a typical shift-worker, I have had times in which I have worked odd times and hours that are not normal.  It has taken some planning and forethought to make it work without affecting me.
