Does Healthier Mean Smarter?

At times, there can be a delicate balance between mind and body. Most people are aware that both are important. A question may be, however, can exercising the body also improve the mind? For those who are concerned about maintaining whatever mental function they have, following a good routine of exercise may help to keep the mind sharp. Most people have certainly seen or known people who are advanced in age yet sharp as well as fit. Many would draw the same conclusion based this observation alone. There may be some good reasons for this.
Exercise May Actually Make the Brain Increase in Size
It seems as if everyone knows that exercising can increase the size of the muscles. Apparently the same thing may be said about the brain. When people exercise, some of the vital parts of the brain may increase in size. Some of this could be due to the fact that more oxygen is supplied to the brain. As this happens, those parts that receive a better blood supply may well be able to function at a higher level.
Exercise May Lift Emotions
The brain is the center of thought and emotions. Most people who have engaged in any kind of physical activity are aware that they may experience some good feelings after doing so. Such activity can trigger the brain to release dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These are responsible for many of the feelings that make people feel good. It is believed that exercise can also increase some areas of the brain that can help to create some defense against some neurological problems that people may experience. While exercise may not be able to prevent dementia, it may help to build barriers that can shield against some of them.
It Never Hurts to Be Balanced
If we work on our physical health, we are sure to gain from it. If it happens to improve our mental health as well, so much the better. Anytime I find myself down or confused, I try doing some kind of exercise. It may be something as simple as walking, or it may be something much more strenuous such as a full workout. Either way, it always seems to lift my spirits and help to clear my mind. As a result, I will be better able to make decisions and perform daily tasks. Achieving better balance physically and mentally should be a goal we all share.
