Staying Safe and Healthy Count

By Tom Herrin

When people have been accustomed to getting out and doing whatever they want, staying in can be a little culture shock.  It is one of those things that is fine if it is by choice, but if it is due to some other circumstances, it becomes quite a challenge.  People are staying home more now for their own health and safety.  Quarantine is of the most tried and proven ways of dealing with illnesses in which little is known about them.  Breaking that opportunity for disease to pass from one person to another is a critical part of interrupting the spread.  The more strictly a quarantine is followed, the sooner it will end.  Hopefully this opening up will be successful if taken slowly.

Renew Family Ties

When people are thrown together for a period of time, it can present some real obstacles but great perks.  Many people tend to become pretty involved in their own activities somewhat distant from those of other members of a family.  In a time in which they suddenly have lots of time  together, some don't know what to do.  The good news is that there are plenty of things to do.  Many of these are things that they simply never considered due to their busy schedules.  There is always the option of pulling out that puzzle that was put away and never done.  It can be fun for a family to sit around a table and work one.  There are lots of chances for conversation and time is not a factor.  Many times, these can last hours without ever realizing it.  For those with small children, an old fashioned scavenger hunt around the house or yard can be fun.

Remember the Need for Exercise

When people are shut indoors, it is easy to forget about getting much physical activity.  For those who may remember, those miners who were stuck in the cave-in at a mine in Chile in 2010 maintained some level of fitness by having a daily routine of exercise.  Anyone can do that.  Whether it is a formal exercise program or a dance competition, exercise can be productive and fun.

Take Turns

This can be a great time for us to encourage each member of our families to participate.  We can take turns each day choosing games or leading exercise.  It is a good way to allow everyone to take part.  It is also a wonderful way to become a better listener.  As parents, we often fail to make quality time to listen to our kids.  We may have that time now.  Make the most of it.  It may be a great time to strengthen families.
