How to Baby Your Back

By Sara Butler

It’s no secret that statistics are not on your side when it comes to back pain. According to the National Institutes of Health, you have an 80 percent chance of experiencing back pain at some point. Some back pain is unavoidable, such as pain experienced during pregnancy, but others can be avoided if you can learn how to baby your back a bit.

Check Your Posture

No matter what you’re doing – walking, sitting, running, or laying down – there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it. The right way keeps your spine aligned and your body balanced, while the wrong way leads to joint dysfunction, restrictions, and imbalance. You need to work on always being aware of your posture when you’re doing things, and work to keep your head in line with the rest of your body. Use proper supports while sitting at home or at work, and use pillows to help support you as you sleep at night. Discuss how to best keep your posture a priority with a chiropractor at The Joint.

Get Active

Back pain and poor fitness go hand in hand, so if you’re more inclined to channel surf on your couch rather than getting out and actually surfing, then you need to get more active! You should focus on strengthening the muscles in the core and work on flexibility in order to keep your spine healthy. Throw in some cardio for a workout for your heart, and you should be good to go! Just remember to always check with a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise plan.

Lift the Right Way

Lifting the wrong way can be detrimental to the health of your back. Make sure when you lift things, you use the strength of your legs and hips to do it, never your back. Don’t bend at the waist, but rather squat in order to keep pressure off your lower back. You should also hold objects as close to your body as possible as you lift, and pivot when carrying something heavy instead of twisting your back.

A Few Other Areas to Look At

In order to promote a healthy back, you also need to:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Eat a balanced diet with plenty of vitamins and nutrients
  • Drink plenty of water a day
  • Work on controlling stress in daily life
