Work at a Desk? Chiropractic May Be Right For You

By Paul Rothbart

Being physically active is important for keeping healthy. So is earning a living. A busy work schedule can consist of extra hours each week. For those who sit at a desk all day, this means lots of inactivity. It also means sitting with the back, neck, and limbs in one position for long periods of time. This is detrimental to health and can cause pain and problems in several areas of the body. But we have to work to survive, so what to do? Here are some ways that office workers can stay healthy while doing their jobs.

Ergonomics

Ergonomic is a modern term that we hear quite a bit. It's not just a fad. Setting up your workspace properly and equipping it with ergonomic tools will have a positive impact on your health. When using a computer, an ergonomic keyboard and mouse help prevent carpal tunnel and other repetitive strain injuries. An office chair with lumbar support adjusted to the correct height is also essential. It is a good idea to set your space up thoughtfully. Adjust your monitor so that when looking straight ahead, your eyes are on the top of the screen. Keep commonly used items such as pens, pencils, and pads within easy reach.

Taking Breaks

It is important to take frequent breaks. Even short ones will help. Every hour or so, get up, move around and stretch. Get out of the office two or three times a day and get in a walk. Change your environment for a little while. For mental health, a break is helpful because it will take your mind off any stressful tasks you are performing. Stepping away for a bit is refreshing and may help you find creative solutions to problems. The worst thing you can do is remain chained to your desk for an entire shift.

See a Chiropractor

Chiropractic care is not just people who perform heavy labor for a living. All that sitting in one position takes a toll on the spine and joints. Even when taking breaks and setting up an ergonomic work space, neck and back pain are common. Stiff shoulders, wrists, and elbows also are a potential problem. The joints of the lower body may also become sore and stiff. The hips are especially susceptible to this. A licensed chiropractic can perform an examination, find any subluxations or other problems, and adjust them. With regular visits, your body will always be in adjustment and this can prevent soreness, stiffness, and injuries.

Sitting at a desk all day is not any easier on the body than hauling bricks. Office workers need to protect themselves by taking breaks and working ergonomically. Seeing a chiropractor regularly may be the best thing you can do. Drop in at The Joint Chiropractic and see what they can do for you.
