Chiropractic Helps Relieve Tension Headaches
By Debra Rodzinak
Headaches are a pain, literally. They can stop you from doing what you love, keep you from completing tasks, and be a major source of stress. Tension and migraine headaches are two different types of headaches. Often, those who suffer with several of these headaches in a short period of time can classify them as cluster headaches because they occur in clusters. For many of these patients, over the counter drugs do not help keep the headaches at bay.
Chiropractic helps address the source of the headaches instead of masking the pain felt by the patient. When the source is addressed, many patients find that their headaches and the frequency of those headaches disappear -- all without the use of drugs or surgery.
Causes of Tension Headaches
Tension located in the neck can be caused from sitting too long or injury to the neck muscles. Chiropractic spinal manipulation is effective in releasing the tension from the neck and realigning the spinal vertebra located in the neck, allowing the muscles to relax. Once the neck muscles have relaxed, tension headaches often disappear.
Studies on Tension Headaches
Many scientific studies have shown that chiropractic treatments benefit patients with tension and cervicogenic (neck) headaches. In a study that compared two groups of people, one group was provided chiropractic treatments over a six-week period while the other group was given prescription drugs. Even though both groups initially found relief, the chiropractic group had a greater reduction in the intensity and frequency of their headaches compared to the second group. The study reported the difference in the two groups as “significant.”
In another trial, when chiropractic was compared to massage therapy, the chiropractic manipulation was found to be more effective. However, the study also reported that when combined together, patients reported the greatest gains.
