After a long day of classes, your child comes home carrying all of his textbooks, binders, folders and notebooks in a backpack. In addition, one of the teachers assigned an extra assignment, so the backpack is overflowing with extra handouts and markers. Your child complains about the extra work and the pain of carrying it home. Back pain and problems are becoming more common among children, but chiropractors have useful tips that may help.
Reduce the Weight of the Backpack
The most important tip from chiropractors is to limit or reduce the weight of the backpack. Children should not be carrying enormous and heavy bags. Instead, try to keep some books and binders at school or at home. Consider getting backpacks on wheels if the school allows them.
Wear the Backpack the Right Way
Chiropractors recommend that children wear backpacks on both shoulders instead of using one strap. If children wear a heavy backpack on one shoulder with one strap, then they are more likely to have lower back pain, muscle spasms and neck problems.
It is also important to wear bags with padded and comfortable straps. You do not want the straps to dig into the skin. The straps should not be extremely tight because this can be uncomfortable and lead to possible nerve damage or pain.
Get Adjustable Backpacks
Parents often complain about their kids growing out of clothes quickly, but they do not consider backpacks. It is better to get an adjustable bag that can grow with the child. Make sure the straps can be modified and moved as the child gets taller or heavier.
Heavier items such as books and oversized binders should be packed closer to the back, and lighter items can go in the front of the bag. Chiropractors also recommend making sure pointy or uncomfortable items such as scissors or rulers are not able to hurt the child and stick out of the bag. Backpacks that have multiple compartments should be balanced, so one side is not heavier than the other.
