Express Yourself with More Than Words for Health
By Tom Herrin
Doing something for health does not always take on the form of exercise or diet matters, though both of those are critically important. Many times, people let the little things go without giving them their proper place. All too often, it is well after the fact that people realize that some of those small things could have made a difference between joy and sadness, or motivation and discouragement. Interacting with others in the right way can have a huge impact on our own feelings as well as those of others. Most people start out life being very tactile but learn otherwise through a series of bad experiences.
A Pat on the Back Can Do Wonders
While it may seem simply like a saying, giving someone a pat on the back can provide the physical contact that can encourage people to do more. The feeling of acceptance by others can help people to try harder and be more confident. If they feel that others believe in them, they are more likely to believe in themselves and their abilities. The teacher or coach who has a gentle touch can often be the single most influential factor in a person’s success, sometimes having an impact that lasts a lifetime.
A Hug May Make People Healthier
No matter whether the party is the hugged or hugger, there appears to be quite a few benefits from the act itself. Studies have shown that people who receive hugs on a daily basis experience less illness and have greater pain tolerance. They also have lower blood pressure. Hugging is apparently a pretty good stress-reliever as well as most people have been a recipient of some hugging at some time. It seems to be able to calm, reassure, and soothe nerves.
You Can Start Today
The great thing about something as basic as hugging is that there is no special equipment needed. All you have to do is hug someone you care about or want to encourage. My years as a school principal taught me that if I needed to correct a student, if I could start by putting my arm around him or her as we walked to the office and talked, I had made a positive connection where there was more trust and openness. The student would be more receptive to correction, and we could more likely have a solution that was a good one. Too many people have not experienced a good, friendly hug in a long time. If you can be the one to start it, you may both have better health.
