Memory and Learning Languages May Go Together

By Tom Herrin

There are plenty of programs available that purport to work wonders when it comes to helping people to remember things.  The old tricks, such as tying a string around a finger simply tend to remind people that they forgot something, may not be known to everyone. When things are there that can actually help them to have better mental abilities or, at least, better mental performance, we should take advantage of them.  There are so many things around today that are used to do many of the things that once required mental processing that one may wonder if there is sufficient challenge to keep the brain working.  Something that has shown to be somewhat helpful is for people to attempt to learn a new language.

Learning a New Language May Boost Math Performance

Lots of individuals struggle with math.  While there may be some good reason in some cases, others may simply be fearful or had bad experiences in the past.  It has been shown that those who study another language actually perform better in math.  In studies from both the University of Michigan and the University of Massachusetts, researchers found that those who were studying another language, even for as little as 90 minutes per semester, showed higher achievement in math.  There is obviously something to opening up the mind to more learning that is a trigger.

Who Needs a Better Memory?

With so many tools today to help remind people, they may rely on memory less than they once did.  Memory is, and always has been, a significant part of brain function.  The old sayings about how an elephant never forgets has led to some interesting studies.  They have remarkable uses for their memories.  If people can improve theirs, they may increase their chances of success in many areas.  Studies have found that those who speak more than one language are better able to remember names and other details.  It may be another indicator as to what may be gained as they use what they have.

Can We Gain Confidence?

Many of us can stand more confidence.  Anytime we experience learning and can see our improvement, it can provide us with a greater sense of confidence.  Feeling that we can communicate in more than one language should give us a sense of accomplishment.  I can say for sure that as I have simply studied to learn another language, I have felt better about my ability to learn.  The better I feel about, the better I seem to be able to perform.
