Apples May Serve Multiple Purposes in a Lunch

By Tom Herrin

Finding foods to add to a menu to improve the health of a family is likely a goal of everyone who has that responsibility.  Looking for just the right thing to make a menu both appealing and healthy may be a little trickier.  It shouldn’t require hiding whatever it is that is being added to that diet.  Apples are simple foods that are easily stored and quite popular.  Many school kids have carried them in lunches for years without realizing just how much they can do for overall health.

They Are Rich in Fiber

Keeping food moving through the digestive system is a pretty important job.  People have suffered for years due to problems with difficulties within the bowels.  Apples can help this in two major ways.  First of all, apples are high in fiber.  They is both filling and add bulk to the food that is processed in digestion.  This keeps it from remaining in the intestines.  The other thing is that apples have a high water content.  This helps as well in the process of preventing digesting food from becoming lodged, causing constipation.  Water is also something that may satisfy hunger as many times when people are hungry, they are really thirsty.

They May Help Fight Some Cancers

Apples are believed to help against some specific cancers.  Breast and colon cancers seem to respond.  More recently, it has been found that apples may help in the fight against lung cancers as well.  For some reason, they appear to reduce it or slow its spread.  In the years to come, hopefully there will be a clearer picture of their role in this.  For now, it is not a bad reason to add them to your family’s daily diet.

They May Be a Dessert That Cleans Your Teeth

Apples can be eaten many ways. I  like them with peanut butter, honey, and uncooked oats.  They are good cooked in pies or as baked apples.  They have become pretty common in salads.  When you eat them in some kind of raw form, they have the ability to clean the teeth and gums, often fighting bacteria that may otherwise cause problems.  How many times can you pack a dessert with lunch that does that?  Put a different kind in every day, and see the result.
