Good Carbs Are Essential in a Good Diet
By Tom Herrin
When looking for ways to improve a diet, it is not uncommon to focus on what needs to be cut out. Some of the choices are simple. Everyone knows a few of the things that need to be on the list, but some may buy into things that really need to stay. Fear or lack of education on a given subject can lead to some bad decision-making. Anytime people want to make the best decision about any given subject, collecting as much information about it is always a good start. For many people, cutting out fats is a way to promote better health. While eating less fat has proven to do some good things, the body still needs some fat in order to work properly. For others, cutting carbs seems to be a way to trim up. Some of this can be beneficial, but some carbs are necessary for good health.
The Bad Ones May Seem Tasty
Anyone who goes to a convenience store with the purpose of picking up a quick snack may be in trouble. It is not that it is all bad, but many of the products that are packaged as ready-to-eat tend to have far too many carbs from sugar. Some recommendations have indicated that women should not consume more than 100 calories per day of these kinds of carbs and the men should keep their intake to 150 or less.
There Are Lots of Good Carbs
It is completely acceptable to eat good carbs. As a matter of fact, they are necessary for the muscles to perform their work and stay healthy. When people fail to have enough carbs, the body will begin to use muscle tissue for fuel. This is obviously bad. Those better carbs can be easily found. They come from fruits, vegetables, and healthy grains just like every mother told their kids for years. It is seldom necessary to place strict limits on how much of these that people eat.
Be Part of Your Health Team
If you are searching for ways to maintain better health, take a big role in ownership. I am a big advocate of reading labels. It can help us to be more aware and informed. It can also help us in planning. I always read labels on any new product and often on others I purchase routinely just to verify that I am on the right track with my diet. At least, it gives me the feeling that I am more in control.
