Lucky You, Good Health Is Just Outside

By Tom Herrin

When we get into the times of the year when the days are somewhat shorter, a lot of us seem to fall into a trap. That is, we may withdraw from the rest of the world to retreat into our den of solitude, the place where we stare at the television or spend countless hours reading everything we have ever heard was good.  This is not all bad, but we should never dare to avoid the sunlight as it is just as important in these days as it is when the sun is high in the sky.  If we want to get the most out of life, we have to make every effort to take in sunlight on a regular basis.

The Sun May Lift Our Mood

Have you ever noticed that when you have less light, or a lot of gray skies, that you seem to get a little down?  If you have, it may not have been your imagination.  Experiencing some kind of depression when you have less sunlight is a real thing.  For some individuals, it is quite serious.  I know only too well because I have, at least mildly, this condition.  I figured out long ago that I was in trouble when I didn't get much sunlight.  I found myself very unproductive.  I sometimes could barely get myself going.  This condition is pretty serious for about a half million people in this country.  Getting more sun is the cure.

The Sun Provides Energy

We all pretty much learned in school that the sun is the source of energy in the food chain.  As it turns out, it also can affect our brain.  When sunlight strikes our eye, it can ignite something in our brain that cranks up our metabolism.  This can happen in a good combination.  When we have sudden natural light, it stops our body from producing melatonin, which helps us sleep.  This can work with this trigger in the brain to provide us with a good way to wake up for the day.

It Is in Our Power to Fix

If we find ourselves lacking in sunlight, guess what?  It is the cheapest fix possible for any health problem.  All we have to do is open a window and let it in.  if we prefer, we can take a walk outside for a few minutes.  It won't take long, and it can work wonders.  It is one thing we can all include in our daily lives with very little effort.
