Taking Care of Your Skin Is a Lifetime Pursuit
By Tom Herrin
Of all the things we try to do for ourselves, taking care of our skin is one of those things that should be a full-time effort. After all, it has some big responsibilities such as protecting us from infection. Many of us recognize the skin as a representative of our personal beauty. Not only that, but our skin may well reflect our overall health. We notice when skin is dry, discolored, wrinkled or something else. We also see it as particularly healthy if it is smooth with a good color. We are fortunate in that, today, we can do several things that may help protect and preserve our skin for the long haul.
Use Sunscreen on a Regular Basis
At one time, there was no really effective way to protect us from damage from the sun. As kids, we would simply burn and pay the price. Now we have some pretty good sunscreens. It is recommended that we use a mineral-based sunscreen with SPF of at least 30. Remembering that we may get sun when we don't expect it could be a reason to apply daily. I have often been burned by the sun shining through the car window. Sunscreen may help protect us from potentially serious skin cancers.
Try Daily Facial Massages
Another thing I would not have considered at time is a facial massage. A simple massage each day may help to relax the muscles of the face. It may also help to increase blood flow to the skin and improve color. You may be surprised at how a facial massage can help you feel rejuvenated. A good thing is that you can do it yourself in only a few minutes.
Drink Plenty of Water
Most people are aware that they need to drink water, and lots of it. Water is essential to maintain good blood flow. It can help to flush out the impurities. Water is necessary in order to maintain a good level of moisture and help prevent dry skin and wrinkles. Too little water may be a contributor to early aging. Even though we have all heard, for years, that we should drink eight glasses of water per day, that number is variable. If we are involved in heavier physical activity or excessive heat, we may need more. If we are in the wind we may need more, too. The key is to learn to listen to our bodies.
