There Is No Need to Fear Bread in a Healthy Diet

By Tom Herrin

As we concern ourselves with doing everything possible to protect our health, we sometimes go to great lengths.  Gathering all of the available information can be a good start.  For many people, decisions are made about what foods to include and what foods to avoid.

In recent years, bread has been frowned on by many individuals as something that may cause problems.  One of the reasons is the fact that some breads have been made with fewer nutrients than may be desired, and they have far less fiber than we should have.  Another cause for concern is often the fact that some bread can be trouble for diabetics.  All is not as bad as it may seem because there are some really good products available today that have lots of healthy ingredients for any of us.

Sourdough Bread

More than likely, you have tried sourdough bread of some kind.  It is available in many restaurants with certain kinds of sandwiches and is often served in other forms with meals.  It has one of the more unique tastes of any bread.  This is due to a little different process used in making it.  Bacteria in this bread helps to break down carbs for easier digestion.  This means that they are more easily absorbed by the body.  This bread is also generally lower in sugar and much higher in protein.  It can be an overall good choice for healthy bread.

Whole Grain Bread

While we know we should look for whole grain ingredients in bread, we may compromise.  There is no need to do so as we can simply read the labels to determine the contents.  Whole grain bread may contain wheat or some other grain.  It sometimes has no sugar and is generally low in calories.  It is not at all a bad option as it is nutritionally sound.

There Is Nothing Wrong With Good Taste

Seeking a bread with a flavor we enjoy is no crime.  Who wants to eat food that tastes bad?  When we look for something that is healthy, there is no reason to choose something we don't enjoy eating.  Read those labels and try a few samples.  If they are not available, you won't be out much money when you buy a loaf to try.  It will be well worth the effort in the long run, and you will have something to add to your meals that will add health as well.
