A Visit to A National Park Can Strengthen Values
By Tom Herrin
The world today is full of entertainment of all kinds. It is pretty hard to compete with some of it. Children have so much at their fingertips that it is difficult to offer something that can compare to the availability of much of it. Until they are exposed to living history in which they have personal opportunities to experience things, they are unable to realize the greatness of many of the wonders of this nation. Visiting a national park can provide that opportunity and nurture their curiosity as well. Nothing can take the place of first-hand experience. Many children will learn lessons in this way that are impossible for them to ever learn any other way.
Seeing First-Hand Is Believing
It is wonderful for children to be able to learn about their heritage in the setting in which it may have occurred. When they can see and feel the things that they have been told about, a new meaning is unfolded. Learning can take place when their natural curiosity is stimulated. The earlier they have these experiences, the more fulfilling it will be to them. They can connect with the events that shaped history. They can strengthen a bond with their forebearers.
Natural Wonders Are Just That
Some of the things of nature are truly unbelievable. For children to see first-hand what these things look like, they can form a greater appreciation. It takes exposure. When anyone sees the Royal Gorge for the first time, the awesome wonder of nature can’t help but make an impression. The same can be said of many of the huge caverns, giant peaks, and even scenes such as the Badlands. Whether it is children or adults, there will be a desire for more.
Learning Is Stimulated By Experience
The more people see, the more they want to see. Not only can visiting these great sights tie families together, the experience can make a lasting impression. Curiosity will be stimulated and a natural sense of national pride can be obtained. When people see what others value, they will increase in their own sense of worth. To instill patriotism and appreciation of nature, visiting a national park can do a better job than any other resource. When considering a vacation, give some thought to something that can make a lasting impression. Think about visiting a national park.
