How to Find the Perfect Gym
By Genevieve Cunningham
If you're not well versed in the fitness world just yet, you might feel like all gyms are created equal. They all offer equipment and nice facilities and fitness professionals. What else matters? Actually, probably a lot more than you realize. Finding a gym is a lot like finding the perfect pair of gloves … you want something that fits. If you need a gym to call home, take a look at these tips for finding the perfect gym to meet your needs.
Ask for a Tour
Any good gym will allow or even encourage a tour of the facilities before you join. They want you to be happy with your choice, and the more you know beforehand, the higher likelihood you’ll sing the gym’s praises. A fitness professional or worker will walk you around to show you the changing rooms, equipment, weight room, and any other special services that the gym offers. This is a great time to get a feel for the gym and its programs. Do this first before you ever sign any papers or hand over your credit card.
Ask to Speak With a Trainer
Even if you’re not going to hire a personal trainer, it can be a good idea to speak with one from the very beginning. Why? Because you’ll get a pretty good idea as to whether or not they’re trained and knowledgeable. And the quality of the trainers might give you a good idea about the quality of the gym. While this isn’t always 100 percent accurate, it’s a good guide to follow when you have multiple gyms to check out.
Find Out the Amenities
Bottom line: What do they offer? You’re going to want to make sure that they have the things that you need. Do you need a sauna for health purposes? Do you need a nursery for childcare? Do you need an indoor swimming pool? These things matter. If you need childcare, and the gym doesn’t have it, you’ve wasted a lot of money. Find out everything you can about the amenities, and make your decision from there.
Picking a new gym can be both exciting and frustrating. Use these tips to make sure you’re getting exactly what you need. If you’re willing to do a little bit of work in the beginning, you’ll find the perfect gym to call home and to help you get in the best health of your life.
