Why You Need Vitamin C and Where to Get It

There are so many nutrients that we really need in our diets. Without them, our overall health suffers. For the most part, we get most of what we need through a normal diet. But there are times when we need more of a particular nutrient, and we need to know how to get it. One of these important nutrients is the necessary Vitamin C. If you want to live a healthy life with a healthy diet, take a look at why you might need more Vitamin C, followed by some ideas about where to get it.

Why Do We Need Vitamin C?

So why is Vitamin C so important? Though we use this vitamin in multiple ways in the body, one of its most important functions is boosting the immune system. Vitamin C helps give your body a boost in fighting foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and other illnesses. If you want to stay healthy, getting enough Vitamin C is crucial.

Where Can I Get More Vitamin C?

Getting more Vitamin C isn't terribly difficult. Luckily, this vitamin is found in many foods that we already eat on a regular basis. And if you don't already eat these foods, they're easy to add to your menu. A few common sources of Vitamin C might include:

  • Leafy greens - Leafy greens are great for getting Vitamin C. The best options are the dark variety including kale, spinach, collards, and romaine lettuce.

  • Supplements - If all else fails, take a supplement. These can be found at any pharmacy and most grocery stores.

  • Bell peppers - Green bell peppers are full of Vitamin C! Chop them up, eat them raw, sautee them, or add them to your favorite dishes for an extra dose.

  • Tomatoes - You can't count ketchup, but a raw or cooked tomato can give you a nice healthy dose of this immune boosting vitamin.

Getting enough Vitamin C is important for a healthy diet and healthy living. Add these foods to your menu to ensure that you're getting an adequate amount. With some small adjustments, you may find that your diet is tastier and your body healthier all at the same time.
