3 Tips for Raising Healthy Kids

Living a healthy lifestyle is important, and when kids come into the picture, it becomes more important than ever. Everyone wants the best for their children, and a healthy lifestyle is definitely part of that. But kids are tough, and getting them to make healthy choices is really tough! It’s not a task for the weak. If you’re determined to teach your kids healthy habits that will last a lifetime, take a look at these tips to get your started.

Be an Example

Kids aren’t going to do what you say. They’re going to do what you do. If you want your kids to be healthy, you have to be healthy first. Are you telling them to eat broccoli, but ordering pizza? Are you asking them to exercise, but skipping the gym? Monkey see, monkey do. And this statement is the most true when you’re talking about kids! The first step to cleaning up your kids’ lifestyle is to clean up your own.

Get Active

Activity should be a part of life. Though any activity is better than none, it shouldn’t be a big ordeal that the family is going outside. Or that the family is going to the gym. Or that the family is doing anything other than watching TV or playing on the computer. Being active is a way of life, and if you treat it that way, your kids will follow in your footsteps. Join a community group together. Play sports together. Go to each other’s games and support each other. The more you get moving, the more likely this way of life will stick, and the less likely you are to sit around as a family doing nothing.

Create Family Habits and Rituals

Healthy habits definitely start at home, and a good place to start is with your family’s everyday rituals. What do your mornings look like? Do you eat breakfast and have some quiet time? Or does it look a bit more like Home Alone? Create rituals that promote health. Wake up early -- everyone! Go to bed early -- everyone! Cook a healthy dinner together or go on walks in the evening. The more rituals that you do as a family, the more your kids will accept these as a way of life and stick with them even when they’ve grown and flown the nest.

Kids can be healthy. They can even enjoy it! But the process definitely starts at home. Use these tips to get your kids healthy and to promote healthy habits. With a little time and effort, you can create a healthy home atmosphere that your kids can take with them for the rest of their lives.
