Quick Ways to Shake Up a Summer Slowdown
By Sandy Schroeder
As summer warms up and routines settle in, you may want to shake yours up a little. Still want to make 30 minutes of exercise happen every day? Still need to lose 10 pounds? A few changes might put everything into motion.
Change your pace – If you have been jogging, try running. If you walk every day, consider jogging. Start with your doctor’s approval and then maximize your results.
Pressure your back – Trap a tennis ball between your back and the wall and do knee bends to exercise the body and massage the back.
Release stress – Breathe deeply, letting your stomach extend. Then slowly exhale to empty your belly.
Reach out – There’s no better way to lift your spirits than reaching out to help someone. Bake some cookies and take your kids to visit a community hospital or senior center.
Carry Vitamin C – Clementines are tiny oranges that smell wonderful and come loaded with Vitamin C. Take them wherever you go.
Dine with friends and family – Make it a buffet of salads and healthy vegetable side dishes with fresh fruit for dessert. Put your electronics on hold and enjoy the conversation.
Fruit dip – Choose cherries or apricots and dip them in melted dark chocolate. Chill in the fridge and serve for dessert or snacks.
Enlist a buddy – To make your exercise really happen, recruit a friend or neighbor and pick a good time.
De-clutter weekly – With everybody home in the summer, clutter may be rising. Get everybody to help and clear everything out once a week.
Pick new events – Summer concerts, swim parties, campouts or wilderness hikes could get everybody out of the house and away from video games.
Rethink your garden – It’s not too late to plant some herbs, flowers or spinach. Start small with a flowerbed full or window planters. If it’s a success, expand your efforts.
Get some new wheels – New bikes for everyone could round out the summer with some nice rides on quiet bike paths through the park.
Start family nights – Give everybody a turn and pick special nights for the family to watch movies, barbecue, or invite friends over.
Whatever works, keep repeating it to get the most out of your summer. Then look for more.
