Using Your Hands Can Rest Your Brain

By Tom Herrin

Stress is a familiar problem for most of us.  Many people undergo different kinds of stress as they experience various changes in circumstances in life.  Not everyone reacts to the same things as trauma.  Some people under stress may seem distant and unproductive while others can appear to have symptoms of panic or desperation.  These signs may affect the work environment or the family setting.  Finding something that can help to shift their attention to another worthwhile endeavor could be a solution that can improve their mental health.  For many people, working with their hands can provide that change of activities that can make a difference.

People Have Done This Successfully For Many Years

There are plenty of things people can do with their hands.  The mental image of a parent or grandparent knitting as other things go on around them is somewhere in the back of most minds.  While many simply thought of it as the work women did in olden times, there may have actually been several benefits from doing it.

It Can Give the Brain A Break

The constant strain of our thought processes working can be very taxing on people.  The brain can become tired and need a rest like any other body part.  When people use their hands in an activity, they are usually creating something.  When people have the opportunity to work with their hands, their brain is able to take its focus away from many things that become distractions.  It has been suggested that it can have similar effect as meditation.  Many of the things that tend to be involved in everyday stress may seem to disappear.  Even the confusion between the normal reactions and everyday challenges may disappear.

It Can Be Rewarding

Everyone needs some activity in which they can accomplish something that they envision as a finished product of themselves.  This opportunity to create can provide a feeling of success.  It can bring about happiness.  On the other hand, it can cancel out feelings about failure and disappointment.  If you find yourself stuck in the same old rut, you may want to try doing something with your hands.  It can be good feeling.  It could be knitting, whittling, drawing, doing puzzles, or if you are just trying to get started, shuffling and dealing cards.  The feeling of reward could surprise you.
