Foods And Fitness Could Be Part of Fall Activities

By Tom Herrin

With summer coming to an end, the effort to be healthier doesn’t have to.  The onset of cooler temperatures means those pleasant days and nice nights are at hand.  It seems like just about everyone looks forward to this break from the heat and physical trials of summer.  Fall means that holidays are not far away, and families will soon be reuniting for special occasions.  It is a prime time to consider ways to improve health and find better ways to manage.

Joining In the Harvest

There are lots of things to pick or pick up as fruits and nuts begin to ripen at this time of year.  Picking something off a tree or picking something up from the ground both involve bending, stretching, and reaching as well as walking around.  It is said that several hundred calories may be burned in an hour of this kind of activity.  As people become lost in the task, they don’t even think of this as exercise.  With the almost daily frequency needed to bring in this type of harvest, exercise will be pretty regular.

Get Out the Bike

The fall air is ideal for riding a bicycle.  Whether it is during the day or evenings, which is best for me, the cooler feel is inspiring.  As people ride, they will sometimes feel that they never tire and could ride endlessly.  This activity is low impact and can be done as tolerated by the individual.  It will burn calories and improve the overall conditioning.  The legs and cardiovascular system are sure to improve.  Most people have access to some kind of bike, either their own or their kids’, so there is likely to be no expense.

Let’s See What Farmers Have Grown and Use It

A visit to a farmers market can provide a good idea of just what is grown in the area.  It is possible something you have never tried.  As you browse around, you can get some great fresh produce and gather some thoughts about what is out there.  Buy something and go find some new recipes.  It can be a fun experiment and probably help to make an impact on your diet.  You may be surprised just what some of these foods can taste like.  You may well be able to take another step in improving your health with good food along with fitness.
